A Healthy Shake to Make a Baby Dance

Have I mentioned that this is one active baby? Probably not, since even the BabbyDaddy didn't know that it was doing hundreds of somersaults a day until my last prenatal appointment. Up until recently, I haven't been feeling maternal enough to acknowledge FutureBabby tap dancing on my bladder. Now that things are looking brighter - and I'm working on upping my enthusiasm for this pregnancy - it's kind of fun when the inevitable breakdancing starts.

Let's see... FutureBabby was doing acrobatics at about 3 a.m. last night. Right before I went to bed. And as I was reading to P. before she went to bed. FutureBabby is a night owl, I think, and likes to sleep in because the first movement I feel in the morning only comes after breakfast. What does FutureBabby want for breakfast? A chocolate milkshake. What does FutureBabby actually get for breakfast? Something like a chocolate shake, but healthier.

healthy chocolate shake recipe

Here's my healthy chocolate shake recipe:
  • 1 ripe banana, cut into chunks and frozen
  • A few squirts of chocolate syrup
  • 3 tsp. cocoa powder
  • 3 tsp. ground flax
  • 1/3 c. mild lettuce
  • 1/4 c. smooth peanut butter
  • A little of anything else you like (e.g. whey powder, oats, etc.)
  • Soy milk
Put everything but the soy milk into the jar of a Magic Bullet or other small blender. Add enough soy milk to fill up your jar. Blend, either until smooth or if you're like me, until frothy. If you want, use sugar free chocolate syrup or leave out the syrup altogether. I plan to do that next time to cut down on the (2R,3R,4S,5S,6R)-2-[(2S,3S,4S,5R)-3,4-dihydroxy-2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]oxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxane-3,4,5-triol.

I've been drinking these healthy shakes - okay, healthyish - in place of breakfast a lot and being that the recipe is a bit on the carboriffic side, they make FutureBabby dance its little tushy off every time. Yum.

  1. Nice one! I've been having a breakfast shake of banana, milk, maca powder, cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp of honey. I'd been wondering about oats - I might try tossing a few in tomorrow. :)

    1. I'm intrigued by the maca but I'm going to wait on it since it hasn't been studied much wrt to pregnancy. But everything else is part of my smoothie staples toolkit. Go Team Shake!

  2. I loved shakes and smoothies for breakfast when I was pregnant, maybe that's why Marlie loves them too. it's a great way to get her daily allowance of veggies and fruits in one shot

    1. It is, it is! It's always a toss up, though, whether P. will actually drink them.

    1. I'm going to guess we bought them from the same glass etching place on Etsy. We also have other designs - I bought Tedd a variety pack for his birthday one year!

  4. This sounds great, though I have to admit the lettuce scares me. Promise it doesn't hurt? I have a super active baby inhabiting my body right now too, so this definitely resonated with me. Crazy how much they can move! And I thought my first one moved a ton! This shake will definitely get him dancing. He seems to be a big fan of chocolate.

    1. Don't fear the lettuce! You're just adding enough to get some good for you green stuff in there, but not enough to add ANY flavor!
