3 Reasons It's Great to Ditch Diapers

We spent a weekend away recently with a family that has a little one in diapers. She's a total sweetie - a new walker and old enough to be fun. I'd forgotten, however, about all the stuff that goes along with having an older baby in diapers. Like waking up to a big stinky poop, for example! No one wants to wake up sitting in their own waste at 5 a.m. but I'd also argue that similarly no one wants to wake up at 5 a.m. to the task of changing that poopy diaper!

Yes, we're still dealing with nighttime pull-ups over here but at least they can be stripped off like it's no big deal - a parental chore that doesn't take a lot of mental energy. I can wake up halfway, wander to my kiddo's room, chuck the pull-up and be back asleep in roughly three minutes.

And, bonus, this kiddo is old enough to get himself some breakfast and go watch cartoons during my Saturday morning nap.

So I guess that's my number one (get it?) plus two more ...

1. No longer dealing with diapers means you're not stopping to change the darn things all the time. You forget how often you have to stop the world to change diapers until you haven't been doing it for a while. Nowadays I'm on the hook for one butt wipe a day but everything else is Bo's own business.

2. Potty training means never having to carry a diaper bag again. Sure, you may have to keep a spare pare of pants in your glove box for a while but it's just not the same thing as lugging around a huge bag. Now what's funny is I'm usually jazzed to carry big purses but I'm more about the Louis Vuitton than I am about the Petunia Picklebottom.

3. No more leaks! Leaky diapers were something we dealt with quite a bit since we tried various brands of cloth diapers (finally settling on these) and that meant a lot of clothes washing. I remember this one time P. had a big blow-out all over herself and my dad... right before he was getting on a plane! Potty accidents can happen but for us they are few and far between these days.

Of course, ditching diapers and going all in on potty training also adds some complications to your life as a parent! And just for balance's sake, here are three reasons switching to undies can be a real PITA.

1. Road trips? Take twice as long! And make that even longer if you have more than one kid. No one wants a potty accident on a family road trip, which means you pretty much have to plan on stopping at every rest area between your house and your destination - and maybe also on the side of the road, too.

2. Potty training is a bummer for a lot of us. My girl got it down pretty quickly. My guy? It took him a long time and lots of stops and starts before he figured out that's nicer to make it to the bathroom on time than it is to have to change out of wet pants!

3. And then there's the fact that kids want company in the bathroom for a looooonnnnnng time. Going potty isn't really supposed to be a social activity but I've spent a lot of time sitting on the bathroom floor just being with a little one who was afraid to be alone or wanted a story during a marathon poop session. Not that there's anything wrong with that but I'd say it's not my ideal way to spend time with my kids.

So there you go! If you're wondering if there are good reasons to get on the potty training train, clearly there are. But there are also plenty of good reasons to wait, too. Especially if you're doing any family road tripping this summer :)
